Message From The Dean

On behalf of the faculty, staff and students I would like to welcome you to the SUNY Upstate Medical University College of Nursing. It continues to be the only nursing program in the region that is part of an academic medical university. We are an institution that remains committed to protecting the health of our community while continuing to stay focused on academics, research, community engagement and public service.

It has been my privilege to lead the SUNY Upstate Medical University College of Nursing since 2018 and serve alongside our distinguished faculty, alumni and staff.  Diversity, equity, and inclusion are necessary to achieve both academic and institutional excellence. At the SUNY Upstate Medical University College of Nursing we are deliberate in our efforts to ensure that each student, staff and faculty feel a sense of belonging and know that their contributions are valued and are an essential part of our institutional success.

We recognize the growing demand for highly-qualified nurses in leadership roles, clinical care, teaching, and research and have designed our programs around the idea that nurses can have a great career and a great life while getting a great education. Nursing faculty are lifelong learners who are abreast of changes in technology, medicine and teaching and continue to play an essential role in reshaping and delivering quality healthcare.

Education continues to be an integral part of our college’s mission to leverage the powerful, professional voice of Nursing through outstanding education, clinical expertise and research to improve health across the communities we serve. Central to the success of our students are faculty who have dedicated themselves to preparing and mentoring future generations of nurses.

As dean of the College of Nursing, I am pleased to report that faculty collaborative research interests include Metacognition, Student Experience during COVID, Transgender and Gender Diverse Nursing Care, PMHNP Perceptions of Integrated Collaborative Care, Telehealth and Minority Population Health, Incorporating Interprofessional Partnerships to Enhance Opioid and Substance Use Disorder Education, Barriers to Culturally Competent Human Immunodeficiency Virus Care Among the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color Community, and the Use of Motivational Interviewing in Primary Care.
