As the only academic hospital-based radiation oncology facility in Central New York, we serve approximately 1,200 patients per year referred from the entire region and see the full spectrum of neoplastic diseases.
We are proud to offer a joint Advanced/Preliminary residency program option with our partners at Upstate Internal Medicine, for those applicants who would like to link their prelim. year with our advanced Radiation Oncology position. Mission Statement
The Cancer Center Department of Radiation Oncology mission is tailored after the Upstate Medical University’s mission statement in terms of improving the health of the community we serve through education, research and patient care, and promises "to offer the best, most proficient care to our patients by providing the most advanced technologies and therapies available, and by participating in and staying on top of the latest in cancer research". Our commitment to educating resident physicians is the strength of our academic practice. The residency program takes pride in close-knit relationships within the group of six residents, the professional team within Radiation Oncology, as well as the Cancer Center as a whole. This holistic, collaborative environment is leveraged to assure best possible care for patients, and exposure to a wide range of educational opportunities for resident physicians.

Program Aims
- We aim to take a holistic approach to training residents to be independent practitioners, and fulfill the SUNY Upstate vision of being “United in expertise, compassion and hope to create a healthier world for all”. In order to achieve this, we…..
- provide in-depth instruction in clinical topics vital to Radiation Oncologists.
- teach merit of collaborative team approach in cancer care, and foster those relationships within the Cancer Center.
- offer “soft skills” training (residents as teachers, effective communication, etc) as well as “support services” training (smoking cessation, nutrition, etc).
- emphasize how physician well-being is vital to clinically sound and compassionate patient services. Provide self-care guidance.
- Pursuit of excellence in clinical practice based on evidence based medicine and active contributions to medical research. Encourage life-long-learning, academic integrity, professional curiosity.
- Promote understanding of health-care systems globally, nationally, and locally, and the role of trusted providers within those systems
(Please note that all candidates entering residency or fellowship programs at Upstate will be subject to a pre-employment post-offer drug test, and must pass USMLE Step III no later than June 1st prior to the final year of residency training. In addition, all male candidates between the ages of 18 and 26 must have registered with the U.S. Selective Service in order to work within the VA Medical Center. )
