Do I need a Social Security Number?

No. A social security number is not required to complete the application for admission. Should you encounter an area where a social security number is needed, please enter all 1's or all 0's.

Am I eligible for financial aid?

Under the Dream Act, undocumented students may be eligible for New York State administered grants and scholarships. You cannot receive federal aid unless you are a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen.

I am a US citizen but my parents are undocumented. Do my parents’ immigration status affect the financial aid resources available to me?

I am very stressed and anxious about my DACA or undocumented status or the undocumented status of a family member. Is there someone I can talk to?

There are many people at Upstate who are good resources. Our International Student Advisor is well-versed in many immigration questions and scenarios and is available at abottjh@ngskmc-eis.net for your inquiries.

There are many people at Upstate who are good resources. Within admissions and financial aid, we can typically direct your inquiry or answer your inquiry by emailing admiss@ngskmc-eis.net or you can also contact our student inclusion professionals at upstatemasi@update.edu

How can I be sure my background check will not compromise my immigration status?

  • Your information shared with Castlebranch and/or MyCertiphi background check agencies will be secure and confidential.
  • Resident status will not affect your background check(s).
  • Be sure to list your permanent address on your background check(s).
